Blood Color Identification
- Bright red (arterial): Often associated with lung or heart involvement. Recovery rates for double-lung hits are generally high.
- Dark red (venous or liver): Can indicate a liver hit or venous bleeding. Liver-shot deer often leave a strong blood trail but require a longer waiting period.
- Pink and watery: Often contains lung tissue or fluids, suggesting a lung hit especially when combined with froth.
- Brownish or foul-smelling: Typically indicates a gut shot. Extended waiting — often 8 to 12 hours or more — is important before tracking.
- Small amounts or white fat: May indicate a muscle hit, brisket hit, or low hit. These situations may require the most patience.
